ferraus bitcrush

Bit-depth and sample-rate reduction

Synopsis

ferraus bitcrush <input> [options] [-o <output>]

What it does

Quantizes to --bits and holds samples at --rate for lo-fi aliasing and grit.

This command is also an fx stage and a pipeline op: ferraus fx in.wav -o out.wav --fx "bitcrush:key=value".

Examples

8-bit, 11 kHz

ferraus bitcrush drums.wav -o crushed.wav

Heavy crush blended in

ferraus bitcrush synth.wav --bits 4 --rate 4kHz --mix 30% -o grit.wav

Mild lo-fi: 12 bits at 22 kHz, like an early sampler

ferraus bitcrush vox.wav --bits 12 --rate 22050Hz -o vox_lofi.wav

Keep the full bit depth and only drop the sample rate, for metallic aliasing

ferraus bitcrush loop.wav --bits 24 --rate 6kHz -o loop_alias.wav

Options

--bitsinteger8Bit depth Range: 1..24.
--ratefrequency11025HzSample-and-hold rate
--mixpercent100%Dry/wet balance: 0% returns the input unchanged, 100% is fully processed

Global options

Every command also accepts the global options (-o, --json, --dry-run, --overwrite, --progress, ...). See Global options.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that outputs are never overwritten: pass --overwrite or a new -o path when re-running.
