ferraus transient

Shape attack and sustain

Synopsis

ferraus transient <input> [options] [-o <output>]

What it does

Envelope-based transient shaper: positive --attack makes hits punchier, negative softens them; --sustain lengthens or shortens the ring after each hit. Works on drums and plucked instruments without a threshold.

This command is also an fx stage and a pipeline op: ferraus fx in.wav -o out.wav --fx "transient:key=value".

Examples

Punchier snare

ferraus transient snare.wav --attack +4dB -o snare_punch.wav

Shorten the room ring

ferraus transient room.wav --sustain -6dB -o drier.wav

Softer click and a longer boom on a kick

ferraus transient kick.wav --attack -3dB --sustain +3dB -o kick_boom.wav

A little extra pluck definition on an acoustic guitar, blended in parallel

ferraus transient gtr.wav --attack +2dB --mix 50% -o gtr_pluck.wav

Options

FlagTypeDefaultMeaning
--attackgain+0dBGain applied to note onsets
--sustaingain+0dBGain applied to the decay after onsets
--mixpercent100%Dry/wet balance: 0% returns the input unchanged, 100% is fully processed

Global options

Every command also accepts the global options (-o, --json, --dry-run, --overwrite, --progress, ...). See Global options.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that outputs are never overwritten: pass --overwrite or a new -o path when re-running.
  • Gains need a unit when not in dB: 0.5x is a factor, -6 and -6dB are decibels.
